Over 50 major newspapers have endorsed Obama.
Big deal. Many of them would endorse a shoe with cheese on it if it was running on a Democratic ticket.
But, when you combine the growing number of print endorsements with the cacophony of conservative voices lining up behind the Democratic ticket, a national consensus begins to emerge.
Today's nod from Colin Powell is more significant than most. As a lifetime Republican, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, National Security Advisor and Secretary of State in the Bush administration, Powell brings a bucketful of credibility to the table.

Is "lifetime" Republican the same thing as "lifelong" or are you making some kind of reference to a cable channel? Besides, my puny brain seems to recall a great deal of angst in some election past over whether or not Colin would come aboard the Republican ticket or cast his lot w/the Democratic ticket. Obviously not 1988, but perhaps 1992? Whatever wonderful election season it was, I would not classify Colin Powell as someone rooted in conservative idealogy.
Okay, he's a Comedy Central Republican, or an ESPN Republican, or maybe a USA Republican.
There have always been concerns over Powell's politics, because he isn't partisan. Which is why Americans respect him.
This American respects him because he kicked major ass in the Gulf War. I think the angst over CP in previous elections is that he represented (to the GOP) a possible connection to black America. Now, w/a black American heading the Democratic ticket, I think you'll see much less gnashing of teeth at his endorsement. That vote was largely lost anyway.
Are you joining with Pat Buchanan and Rush Limbaugh in claiming that Powell's endorsement can be ignored because it's a "black thing" and not really about the issues? Powell only has influence over the black vote? Since he doesn't walk in GOP lockstep, he's just another brother?
I'm not sure that's what you are saying, but that's the meme creeping out of the Mc campaign. It seems that's all they have these days: thinly veiled racism and red-baiting. Can't wait to get my robocall.
As for your questioning of his conservative cred, I don't think anyone harbored illusions that Powell would sway neo-conservatives. He has always represented the moderate wing of the GOP, aka: The real conservatives.
I'm not joining anyone and I'm not trying to raise your hackles. (Although that's easily accomplished these days, it seems) I'm just saying I don't think his endorsement really mattered, one way or the other. If this were 1992 and CP was still the man of the hour, then it might have had some significant impact.

Maybe it's just poor timing, but you raised the race issue with regard to the Powell endorsement. This, on the same day Rush proclaimed loudly and repeatedly (his default setting) that it was "totally about race."
Maybe you can relax as a good portion of our country embraces the rhetoric of racism, red-baiting, cynical division, and fear-mongering as the sum total of their political discourse. I will relax when they lose. Probably not for long, though, since we seem to have an infinite well of ignorance in this country and those who drink at it never really seem to lose, but maybe on November 5th I can relax for a little while.
